The faded café scenes and brilliantly coloured crowd scenes led to Rooney’s work being described by one critic as “successive volumes of the Human Comedy”. Rooney took part in numerous group exhibitions from Young Contemporaries in the 1960s. Early solo shows were at Fulham Gallery, Galerie Petit in Amsterdam and Seasons Gallery, the Hague in 1989 a traveling show was based on Metropole Arts Centre, Folkestone, and he also showed at Mercury Gallery and New Grafton Gallery.
